Voyageur Pharmaceuticals Ltd. (TSX.V: VM) (OTC Pink: VYYRF) has announced significant progress in its proprietary Mueller iodine extraction process, achieving 99.8% purity and overall recovery exceeding 90% in laboratory tests using real oilfield brine. This milestone supports the company's strategy to establish a domestic iodine supply for North America's radiology contrast media market while providing oil and gas producers a new revenue stream from produced brine.

The Houston-based laboratory and fabrication site has validated the process under controlled conditions, producing clean brine suitable for disposal or reinjection, aligning with zero-liquid-discharge goals. A field-capable pilot unit, sized to treat 80,000 liters per day, has been constructed and is scheduled to begin field testing in the coming weeks, with operations planned for September 2026. This transition from bench-scale to continuous field operation using unaltered oilfield brine is critical for commercial deployment.

Key achievements include continuous operation with real brine feed, generation of clean brine for integration into existing disposal or desalination infrastructure, and validation of process parameters for scale-up. The company has also completed a preliminary design for a 200 metric ton per year plant and conducted techno-economic and environmental assessments indicating low operating costs and environmental impact.

Voyageur's modular production concept aims to deploy 200 tonne/yr units at multiple saltwater disposal sites, where iodine concentrate can be produced and transported to a central hub for final polishing, prilling, and packaging. Engineering efforts are progressing through front-end loading stages to refine design and cost estimates for commercial deployment.

For the oil and gas industry, produced brine represents a largely untapped resource, with billions of barrels handled and disposed of annually at significant cost. Voyageur's process aims to recover iodine from this brine, offering a new value stream. The company's vertically integrated strategy seeks to improve supply-chain security, reduce reliance on imported iodine, and lower operating costs for contrast media production.

The company plans to develop up to 1,000 tonnes per year of iodine production capacity to support future pharmaceutical manufacturing.

The Mueller process is a key component of Voyageur's broader plan to vertically integrate the barium and iodine contrast markets. By developing this process alongside its Frances Creek barium project, the company aims to position itself across the medical imaging contrast media value chain.
