Stonegate Capital Partners has initiated coverage on Yum! Brands (NYSE: YUM), highlighting the company's evolving earnings model that is increasingly reliant on Taco Bell's U.S. growth and KFC's international expansion. The analysis comes after Yum!'s second-quarter 2026 results, which showed robust performance excluding the Pizza Hut business, which the company has divested.
Excluding Pizza Hut, Yum! Brands reported system sales growth of 7%, unit growth of 6%, same-store sales growth of 4%, and core operating profit growth of 8% in the second quarter. These figures underscore the strength of the remaining portfolio, with Taco Bell serving as the primary growth engine in the U.S. and KFC providing significant long-term development opportunities globally.
However, a food safety issue at Taco Bell in July has created a near-term interruption. According to Stonegate, sales trends have improved from the July 18 low, and online sentiment has returned to pre-issue levels, with brand-love measures remaining intact. Management expects the incident to pressure third-quarter sales and margins, but Stonegate views the impact as temporary.
KFC's international development runway is a key focus. The division opened 660 gross restaurants across 55 markets in the second quarter, achieving 7% unit growth. Stonegate notes that KFC continues to target higher average unit volumes (AUVs) and same-store sales, with an estimated 20,000-unit whitespace opportunity. Attractive franchisee economics support this expansion, positioning KFC as the largest long-term growth driver for Yum!.
The divestiture of Pizza Hut is expected to leave Yum! more concentrated around its higher-growth, predominantly franchised KFC and Taco Bell businesses. The transaction is anticipated to generate approximately $2.3 billion in aggregate net proceeds. Stonegate expects these funds to be used for revolver repayment and substantial share repurchases, complementing continued unit development and royalty growth across the remaining portfolio.
The broader operating model is also reinforced by stronger restaurant-level performance, which supports franchisee returns and faster unit development. This, in turn, drives growth in Yum!'s recurring royalty base, a key metric for the company's financial health.
