StarCharge, a global leader in EV charging equipment and smart energy systems, held a major industry seminar in Hong Kong and released two white papers exploring transformative trends in the charging and energy sectors. The white papers, titled 'Technical White Paper' and 'Scenario-based Microgrid Technology White Paper,' detail how charging infrastructure is evolving into integrated energy networks and how microgrids are transitioning from customized projects to scalable systems.

According to the 'Technical White Paper,' EV charging infrastructure has traditionally been viewed as support for vehicle sales expansion—building more chargers and expanding coverage. However, as electrification scales up, charging networks are becoming part of the energy system itself. They are no longer just places for vehicles to charge but are evolving into smart energy nodes connecting vehicles, the grid, distributed energy, storage, and digital management. This shift from charging infrastructure to charging network systems indicates a move from basic access to integrated value: from charging services to energy services, from standalone stations to PV-storage-charging systems, and from equipment deployment to scenario-based infrastructure.

The white paper identifies four key points reshaping the ecosystem. First, charging networks are becoming strategic energy infrastructure, connecting mobility demand with the grid, distributed energy, storage, and digital platforms. Second, the future charging network must be designed around specific scenarios, such as urban commuting, highway trips, ride-hailing, logistics, and autonomous driving, rather than a one-size-fits-all approach. Third, digital platforms turn charging networks into operable assets by enabling site selection, pricing, marketing, smart maintenance, and AI-based charging management. Fourth, charging stations are becoming grid-friendly energy resources through technologies like V2G, PV-storage-charging integration, and AI-driven energy optimization, allowing them to provide grid services beyond just charging.

Simultaneously, the 'Scenario-based Microgrid Technology White Paper' highlights that microgrids are emerging as local energy systems designed around real-world scenarios. StarCharge defines a microgrid as a local energy system that coordinates generation, loads, storage, control, and operational strategies within a defined electrical boundary. The white paper emphasizes that microgrids are moving from customized engineering projects toward scalable, replicable energy systems, with four high-value paths: electricity-computing synergy, independent power supply, zero-carbon parks, and green mines.

The white paper also outlines the three-stage evolution of microgrids. Microgrid 1.0 is dominated by AC architecture, integrating renewable energy into existing grids with grid-following control. Microgrid 2.0 is an AC-DC hybrid stage, where AC and DC buses coexist, allowing PV, storage, and DC loads to connect more directly via bidirectional power hubs and solid-state transformers. Microgrid 3.0 is the era of DC microgrids, which reduce conversion losses and support millisecond-level responses as solar PV, battery storage, and EV charging increasingly move toward DC. This evolution is linked to breaking energy access bottlenecks and unlocking integrated value in local energy systems.

StarCharge plans to expand into global markets for EVs and renewable energy, building on its smart energy systems validated in the Chinese market. The white papers underscore the importance of viewing charging infrastructure and microgrids as integral components of a smarter, more resilient energy future.
