Unlike prostate, colon and breast cancers, screening for lung cancer has not been very successful. This is largely because screening focuses on just one risk factor, smoking history, yet many people who develop the disease don’t have a history of smoking. Now, scientists have made progress in developing a blood test that could help in flagging individuals who are at a higher risk of developing lung cancer.

Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer deaths worldwide, partly due to late diagnosis. Current screening methods, such as low-dose CT scans, are recommended only for high-risk groups, primarily heavy smokers. However, approximately 20% of lung cancer deaths occur in people who have never smoked, highlighting a critical gap in prevention strategies. A simple blood test could transform early detection by identifying biomarkers associated with lung cancer risk, allowing for earlier intervention and potentially saving lives.

As it gets easier to detect lung cancer earlier, new treatment modalities like those being developed by Calidi Biotherapeutics Inc. (NYSE American: CLDI) and therapies under development by other companies may become more effective. Early detection is key to improving survival rates, as lung cancer diagnosed at an early stage has a much higher five-year survival rate compared to late-stage diagnosis.

The implications of this announcement are significant. If validated, such a blood test could be offered as a routine screening tool, similar to mammograms or colonoscopies, but without the need for imaging or invasive procedures. It could also be particularly beneficial for non-smokers and younger individuals who are currently not screened. Moreover, it could reduce healthcare costs by preventing late-stage treatments that are more expensive and less effective.

Researchers are now working to refine the test and validate its accuracy in larger clinical trials. While the test is not yet available for clinical use, the progress marks an important step toward a more inclusive and effective lung cancer screening strategy. The development also underscores the potential of liquid biopsies in oncology, which analyze blood samples for circulating tumor DNA or other biomarkers.
