Roto-Rooter Celebrates 90 Years of Plumbing Service, Marking Growth from Local Startup to National Powerhouse

Roto-Rooter, the Cincinnati-based plumbing and water cleanup service, is celebrating 90 years of operation, marking a milestone that underscores its evolution from a patented root-cutting device into a nearly $1 billion national enterprise. The company, founded in 1935 by Samuel Blanc, has more than doubled its revenue over the past decade, climbing from less than $400 million in 2014 to over $900 million in 2024, according to a feature in the Cincinnati Enquirer.

The growth reflects a strategic shift from conventional drain cleaning to a full suite of plumbing services, including hydro jetting, sewer repair and replacement, trenchless repairs, water damage cleanup, and water filtration systems. Roto-Rooter has also pursued a strategy of reacquiring franchises across the country, expanding its service reach while maintaining quality. With over 6,000 employees nationwide, including more than 200 in the Greater Cincinnati region, the company has strengthened its presence in both local and national markets.

Achieving 90 years is a reflection of the dedication of our hardworking employees, said Spencer Lee, CEO of Roto-Rooter, in an interview with the Enquirer. We take great pride in our history and are enthusiastic about what lies ahead.

The company's relevance extends to modern plumbing challenges, such as the problems caused by flushable wipes on aging sewer systems. Roto-Rooter also runs a unique community initiative that provides free rescues for pets trapped in pipes and drains using its specialized equipment. As a subsidiary of the publicly traded Chemed Corporation (NYSE: CHE), Roto-Rooter now accounts for over one-third of its parent company's annual revenue of $2.4 billion.

The firm's headquarters in downtown Cincinnati serves as the central hub for nationwide operations, blending traditional expertise with modern technology.
