Quantum BioPharma Taps Thermo Fisher to Launch Phase 2 Trial of First-in-Class MS Drug Lucid-MS

Quantum BioPharma has taken a significant step toward advancing a new class of multiple sclerosis treatment by enlisting the clinical research business of Thermo Fisher Scientific to implement the Phase 2 trial of its lead drug candidate, Lucid-MS. The Study Start-Up Agreement, announced by the biopharmaceutical company, moves the program from planning into execution and positions a novel neuroprotective approach for rigorous clinical testing.

The deal matters because most existing MS drugs work by suppressing the immune system, while Lucid-MS is designed to protect the nerve's own insulation. If successful, this could offer a much-needed option for progressive forms of the disease, where treatment gaps remain wide. The agreement comes just months after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration cleared Quantum's Investigational New Drug application for Lucid-MS, allowing the company to proceed with human trials.

"Following FDA clearance to proceed with the phase 2 study, initiating study start-up activities with a leading global CRO with extensive CNS and MS experience represents an important next step," said Quantum BioPharma CEO Zeeshan Saeed. "We look forward to working with Thermo Fisher, our investigators and clinical research partners as we initiate the Lucid-MS Phase 2 study."

Thermo Fisher's clinical research business, which Quantum acquired in 2021 for $17.4 billion, is a leading global contract research organization with deep expertise in central nervous system and MS studies. The partnership provides Quantum with an experienced operational partner to manage the complexities of a Phase 2 trial in progressive MS.

MS affects an estimated 3 million people worldwide, including nearly 1 million in the United States. The disease damages myelin, the protective coating around nerve fibers, and is often disabling. A 2023 study in Neurology and Therapy described treatment options for progressive MS as limited, with many patients remaining untreated or continuing to decline despite available therapies. A National MS Society report released this year identified urgent unmet needs, including effective treatment of disease progression and therapies that repair myelin damage.

Lucid-MS is an investigational, first-in-class new chemical entity that targets peptidyl arginine deiminase 2 (PAD2), an enzyme implicated in the hypercitrullination of myelin proteins. By inhibiting PAD2, the drug aims to protect the integrity of the myelin sheath. In preclinical models, the compound has shown the ability to prevent and reverse measures of myelin degradation, and it has demonstrated a favorable safety profile in Phase 1 trials in healthy participants.

The randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled Phase 2 trial will evaluate the efficacy, safety and tolerability of Lucid-MS in people with progressive MS, using clinical and radiological endpoints tied to disease progression. Quantum's President of Scientific and Clinical Affairs, Andrzej Chruscinski, noted that the study will provide an important opportunity to evaluate the innovative approach. "Entering into the Study Start-Up Agreement allows us to begin the operational work required," he said.

The commercial stakes are also notable. Quantum cites Grand View Research in projecting that the MS therapeutics market will exceed $38 billion by 2030. With the Thermo Fisher agreement, Quantum BioPharma has secured a clear operational path and an experienced partner as Lucid-MS enters its next stage of development.
