The National Science Foundation (NSF) has announced federal funding of up to $160 million for a consortium of nearly a hundred entities within Oregon. The grant aims to support initiatives that enhance the semiconductor industry within Oregon and the broader United States.
Led by Oregon State University (OSU), the consortium brings together universities, community colleges, and industry partners to advance semiconductor research, workforce development, and manufacturing. The funding will be distributed over several years, with the goal of positioning Oregon as a hub for semiconductor innovation.
It remains to be seen whether this investment will yield Oregon-linked startups that grow to rival industry giants like Nvidia Corp. (NASDAQ: NVDA). However, the grant is expected to create jobs, attract additional private investment, and strengthen the domestic semiconductor supply chain.
The award is part of the NSF's broader initiative to boost U.S. competitiveness in critical technologies. Oregon's existing semiconductor ecosystem, home to companies like Intel and Lam Research, provides a strong foundation for this effort.
