The Hong Kong International Dragon Boat Races this weekend mark a significant milestone: the 50th anniversary of the event, which has grown from local tradition into a global sporting spectacle. Coinciding with the 35th anniversary of both the Hong Kong China Dragon Boat Association and the International Dragon Boat Federation (IDBF), the occasion is further highlighted by the IDBF's decision to relocate its headquarters back to Hong Kong, formalized in April 2026. The races, held June 27-28 along Victoria Harbour in Tsim Sha Tsui, are the centerpiece of an extended 13-day Hong Kong International Dragon Boat Festival (June 19 – July 1) organized by the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB).
More than 220 teams from 16 countries and regions will compete, including new events such as the 50th Anniversary Fishermen Invitational Cup and the 50th Anniversary Championship, honoring the sport's traditional roots. Dr. Peter Lam, Chairman of the HKTB, emphasized that the festival offers a unique experience that showcases Hong Kong as the Events Capital of Asia, with a stronger race line-up and enhanced entertainment. Visitors can explore a 22-metre traditional wooden dragon boat, a Minions & Monsters-themed installation, live music, and intangible cultural heritage performances like Wing Chun and Chinese juggling.
The IDBF's incorporation in Hong Kong on April 29, 2026, is a strategic move to anchor the federation in the city where international dragon boat racing began. IDBF President Claudio Schermi stated, 'Incorporation in Hong Kong is not a conclusion, but a beginning. It anchors our Federation in the city where our international story started.' The IDBF has applied for funding under the HKSAR Government's Pilot Scheme to Strengthen the Presence of Hong Kong in Asian and International Sports Associations, which supports sports bodies establishing headquarters in the city.
The Dragon Boat Festival, dating back over 2,000 years, commemorates the poet Qu Yuan, who drowned himself in the Luo River. Villagers raced out on boats, beating drums to scare away fish, a tradition that continues today. Traditional treats like zongzi (glutinous rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves) are widely available during the festival. The event reinforces Hong Kong's reputation as a global hub and the birthplace of modern international dragon boat racing, blending heritage with international sportsmanship.
