Greenland Energy Secures Major Stake in Jameson Land Basin, One of World's Largest Underexplored Onshore Hydrocarbon Regions

Greenland Energy Company (NASDAQ: GLND) has taken a significant step toward unlocking the potential of the Jameson Land Basin in Greenland, one of the world's largest remaining underexplored onshore hydrocarbon regions. Under an agreement with 80 Mile, the current 100% owner of the project, Greenland Energy will fully fund drilling to acquire a 70% working interest, while 80 Mile retains 30%. The basin spans more than 8,400 square kilometers (roughly 2 million acres) and has been the subject of extensive geological and seismic analysis over several decades. Historical industry estimates suggest the broader basin system could contain tens of billions of barrels of oil equivalent.

Greenland Energy has contracted Halliburton, a global leader in oilfield services, to handle project management and provide support for logistics planning. This partnership is critical given the remote Arctic location, which presents extreme climate conditions, harsh weather, limited daylight, and no existing infrastructure. The first well is estimated to cost $40 million, with subsequent wells at $20 million each. The asset's remote location and the need for seasonal access windows for equipment and personnel add to the operational complexity.

The Jameson Land Basin is widely viewed as a compelling opportunity in the global oil and gas sector, but it carries substantial risks. Despite decades of study dating back to the 1970s, the basin has never produced a commercial discovery. A 2008 U.S. Geological Survey report indicated less than a 10% chance of containing a technically recoverable hydrocarbon accumulation. Geological challenges include limited seismic data coverage, pervasive igneous intrusions, faulting patterns, and significant Tertiary uplift that creates thermal maturity uncertainty. The 13 billion barrel estimate is based on undiscovered accumulations with no certainty of discovery or commercial viability.

Regulatory and political risks are also significant. Greenland imposed a drilling moratorium in 2021, though existing licenses are grandfathered. Future regulatory changes could jeopardize operations. Geopolitical tensions, including U.S. interest in acquiring Greenland and Greenland’s internal independence movements, could affect operations. Drilling requires Environmental Impact Assessment approval and Field Activities Application approval from Greenlandic authorities. Failure to meet drilling milestones could result in forfeiture of the company's right to earn working interests.

Financially, Greenland Energy faces substantial capital requirements and needs significant funding beyond current resources to complete the drilling program. Commodity price volatility will heavily influence project viability, and the long development timeline means market conditions may change significantly before potential production. The company has expressed going concern uncertainty and substantial doubt about its ability to continue as a going concern without additional financing. Energy transition risk is also a factor, as global demand for oil may decline due to electric vehicle adoption, renewable energy policies, and changing consumer preferences.

Despite these challenges, the agreement with 80 Mile and the engagement of Halliburton represent a major step forward for the project. The full terms of the agreement and the risks associated with the forward-looking statements are detailed in the company's filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission, including the Prospectus filed on April 29, 2026.
