GeoVax Labs, Inc. (Nasdaq: GOVX) has welcomed the launch of a new global mpox vaccine stockpile, a move the company says is a critical step toward ensuring equitable and timely access to vaccines during future outbreaks. The stockpile, funded by Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, and coordinated through the International Coordinating Group (ICG) on Vaccine Provision, was announced on August 27 and is scheduled to begin operations later this month. The initiative is designed to provide countries with a sustainable mechanism for vaccine access, moving beyond reactive responses to establish long-term preparedness infrastructure.

Dodd, Chairman and CEO of GeoVax, emphasized the importance of this development: “Establishing a dedicated global mpox vaccine stockpile is an important step forward in moving from reactive outbreak response toward sustained preparedness. Equitable access requires more than having vaccines available after an outbreak begins. It requires durable procurement infrastructure, sufficient vaccine supply, and the ability to rapidly deliver vaccine protection where it is needed.” He also expressed GeoVax's intent to engage with global health partners as its vaccine candidate, GEO-MVA, advances toward pivotal Phase 3 evaluation.
The stockpile builds on the Access and Allocation Mechanism established during the 2024 mpox public health emergency, addressing barriers that hindered vaccine distribution. Among its strategic objectives, the World Health Organization (WHO) has identified securing a robust product mix of vaccines and supplies and supporting market-shaping efforts to promote longer-term sustainable access. This underscores the importance of a diversified vaccine supply to bolster global preparedness.
GeoVax is developing GEO-MVA, a Modified Vaccinia Ankara (MVA)-based vaccine candidate for mpox and smallpox. The company has completed key manufacturing, regulatory, clinical, and preclinical milestones, positioning it to initiate a pivotal Phase 3 immune-bridging study in the fourth quarter of 2026. The program has achieved GMP clinical product manufacturing, regulatory alignment with the European Medicines Agency (EMA) on an expedited development pathway, and preclinical data supporting the immune-bridging strategy. The company believes that additional qualified MVA vaccine sources are essential to expand supply and manufacturing capacity.
“Creating a sustainable procurement mechanism is an important part of preparedness, but preparedness also requires sufficient and reliable vaccine supply,” Dodd added. “Our objective with GEO-MVA is to contribute a reliable additional source of MVA vaccine capacity that can strengthen global supply resilience.”
GeoVax is also pursuing next-generation technologies to address broader access barriers, including MVA-X for potential single-dose protection, continuous-cell-line manufacturing for scalable production, and microarray-based delivery to simplify administration. These efforts aim to enhance the efficiency and reach of mpox vaccination campaigns.
As the global stockpile infrastructure develops, GeoVax is engaging with government agencies and international organizations regarding future procurement needs. The company sees GEO-MVA as a strategic asset for biosecurity and orthopoxvirus preparedness, potentially providing governments and health organizations with an additional source of MVA vaccine supply.
