Garuda Indonesia, the national flag carrier, is advancing its service transformation with the introduction of a piece-based checked baggage policy, known as the Piece Concept, effective for tickets issued on or after September 1, 2026. This modernized approach replaces the previous weight-based system, providing passengers with clearer limits on the number and maximum weight of baggage pieces.
Under the new policy, passengers can benefit from increased total baggage allowances. For domestic routes, Economy Class passengers will receive one piece weighing up to 23 kilograms, while Business and First Class passengers will receive two pieces weighing up to 32 kilograms each, totaling up to 64 kilograms. On international routes, Economy Class passengers will receive two pieces of up to 23 kilograms each, and Business and First Class passengers will again receive up to 64 kilograms. This represents an increase of up to 34 kilograms compared to the previous weight-based allowances, depending on the route and class.
Garuda Indonesia Director of Transformation Neil Raymond Mills highlighted that the Piece Concept is widely adopted across the global aviation industry. “The implementation of the Piece Concept forms part of Garuda Indonesia’s broader transformation to modernise our services and provide passengers with greater certainty. Clearer limits on the number and maximum weight of baggage pieces will allow passengers to plan and prepare their baggage more easily,” Mills said. The new policy is expected to support more efficient baggage handling and provide consistency when connecting to international flight networks.
Passengers whose tickets are issued before September 1, 2026, will continue to receive the baggage allowance stated on their tickets, even for travel after the implementation date. To ensure a smooth transition, Garuda Indonesia encourages passengers to review the specific allowances for their route, travel class, and fare category on its official website at https://www.garuda-indonesia.com/id/en/new-baggage-policy.
The implementation of the Piece Concept marks an important milestone in Garuda Indonesia’s ongoing service transformation, aiming to deliver more transparent, consistent, and passenger-friendly services. Mills added, “Through this modernisation, we aim to provide greater value and a more comfortable and seamless travel experience, while continuing to uphold the highest standards of safety and compliance with applicable aviation regulations.”
Garuda Indonesia will continue to review and refine the policy based on passenger feedback, reflecting its commitment to enhancing the travel experience.
