FDA Clearance Paves Way for Quantum BioPharma's Lucid-MS Phase 2 Trial in Multiple Sclerosis

Quantum BioPharma Ltd. (NASDAQ: QNTM) is advancing its lead drug candidate, Lucid-MS, toward a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled phase 2 trial in multiple sclerosis (MS) after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) cleared its Investigational New Drug (IND) application. The milestone marks a critical step for a therapy that could fundamentally change how MS is treated.

Lucid-MS is a patented, first-in-class, non-covalent inhibitor of peptidyl arginine deiminase 2 (PAD2). Unlike current MS therapies that primarily suppress the immune system, Lucid-MS is designed to target demyelination directly, aiming to prevent and reverse the degradation of myelin that underlies the disease. This mechanism could address a significant unmet need for patients who do not respond adequately to existing treatments or who experience progressive disability.

The FDA's clearance of the IND application allows Quantum BioPharma to proceed with clinical testing in humans, a necessary step before potential regulatory approval. The planned phase 2 trial will evaluate the safety and efficacy of Lucid-MS in MS patients, bringing the therapy closer to market. Positive results could position Lucid-MS as a novel treatment option in a market dominated by immune-modulating drugs.

In addition to the clinical advance, Quantum BioPharma is collaborating with Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School on research involving the [¹⁸F]3F4AP PET imaging tracer. This tracer is being evaluated as a method to visualize and measure demyelination, which could provide a valuable biomarker for assessing treatment response and disease progression. Such a tool would enhance the development of therapies like Lucid-MS by enabling more precise monitoring of myelin repair.

The broader biopharmaceutical landscape includes several companies making strides in areas of unmet medical need. Novartis AG (NYSE: NVS) recently received FDA approval for Pluvicto® in combination with an androgen receptor pathway inhibitor for certain patients with metastatic hormone-sensitive prostate cancer. Merck & Co. Inc. (NYSE: MRK) had its supplemental Biologics License Application for ENFLONSIA™ accepted by the FDA to expand its indication for certain children at increased risk for severe respiratory syncytial virus disease. TG Therapeutics Inc. (NASDAQ: TGTX) initiated a phase 2 trial of BRIUMVI® in adults with treatment-resistant schizophrenia, and Bristol-Myers Squibb Company (NYSE: BMY) reported positive phase 2 results from the registrational QUINTESSENTIAL trial evaluating arlocabtagene autoleucel in heavily pretreated relapsed and refractory multiple myeloma.

Quantum BioPharma's focus extends beyond MS. Through its wholly owned subsidiary, Lucid Psycheceuticals Inc., the company is dedicated to developing innovative assets for challenging neurodegenerative and metabolic disorders, as well as alcohol misuse disorders. Quantum invented UNBUZZD™ and spun out its over-the-counter version to Unbuzzd Wellness Inc., retaining a 19.84% ownership stake as of March 31, 2026, and royalty rights of 7% of sales until payments reach $250 million, after which the royalty drops to 3% in perpetuity.

For investors, the FDA clearance reduces regulatory risk and signals that Lucid-MS has a viable path forward. If the phase 2 trial succeeds, Quantum BioPharma could capture a share of the multi-billion-dollar MS market with a first-in-class therapy. The collaboration with Harvard and Mass General further validates the science and could accelerate the development of imaging biomarkers. To view the full press release, visit https://ibn.fm/lCey9.
