eyeo, a company based in Eindhoven, Netherlands, has announced the closing of a €40 million Series A funding round, bringing its total funding to €55 million. The round is led by Innovation Industries, with participation from existing investors including imec.xpand, Invest-NL Deep Tech Fund, QBIC fund, High-Tech Gründerfonds (HTGF), and Brabant Development Agency (BOM). The company aims to commercialize its nanophotonic color-splitting technology, which it claims can overcome a fundamental limitation of current image sensors: the loss of approximately 70% of incoming light due to traditional color filters.
According to eyeo, conventional image sensors use color filter arrays that absorb or reflect two-thirds of the light before it reaches the photodiodes, effectively leaving sensors "70% blind." eyeo's technology, developed over seven years of research, uses nanophotonic structures to guide photons directly to individual pixels without filtering, thereby capturing all incoming light. This results in sensors that are three times more sensitive, with native color fidelity and the ability to support sub-0.5-micron pixels for ultra-compact designs.
The funding will be used to bring this technology to production readiness for applications in smartphones, extended reality (XR) devices, smart cities, and other imaging markets estimated at $30 billion. eyeo's sensors are compatible with any CMOS sensor platform, allowing integration into existing manufacturing processes. The company has its headquarters at High Tech Campus Eindhoven and a sensor design center in Antwerp, Belgium.
