Emplify Health by Gundersen, a leader in behavioral healthcare in Wisconsin, announced the opening of the state’s first dedicated emergency mental health facility. The Emergency Psychiatric Assessment, Treatment and Healing (EmPATH) unit, which opened in April at the La Crosse campus, is designed to provide immediate, specialized care for individuals experiencing mental health emergencies.
Under the EmPATH model, patients presenting with mental health emergencies will first go to the Emergency Room but are then transferred to the new unit, where they can stay for up to 23 hours. The 5,000-square-foot facility includes eight exam rooms equipped with appropriate technology and resources, along with dedicated spaces to facilitate comprehensive assessments and interventions. The calming environment aims to promote safety and comfort for patients, families, and staff.
Upon arrival, patients meet with a psychiatric provider within the first hour to review diagnoses, treatment plans, and medications. They then work with behavioral health professionals to address the immediate crisis. After stabilization, the treatment team determines the best next steps, which may include transfer to inpatient behavioral health or discharge with follow-up in outpatient programs.
