Creative Enzymes Launches AI-Integrated Biocatalysis Platform to Accelerate Enzyme Development

Creative Enzymes, a global enzyme technology service provider, has launched an AI-integrated biocatalysis platform designed to accelerate enzyme development. The platform merges computational enzyme engineering with hands-on process development expertise to deliver solutions that are predictable in silico and practical at industrial scale. While biocatalysis is an established manufacturing process, a significant gap remains between identifying application opportunities and having suitable enzymes available. Traditional development approaches struggle to meet the speed requirements of iterative product development.

AI brings critical value on three fronts: predicting enzyme candidates best suited for a given reaction, designing enzymes constrained by process parameters rather than biological factors, and leveraging molecular features to anticipate process performance in advance. The benefits extend beyond speed and efficiency—AI techniques reduce the need to experiment with numerous biocatalyst variants, saving R&D costs and decreasing the risk of process failure by identifying suitable catalysts earlier. This approach also opens routes to molecules previously inaccessible to enzymatic conversion, creating new product opportunities.

The platform's capabilities are delivered through three specialized service modules. The AI-Driven Biocatalysis Solutions module provides an end-to-end workflow from target reaction analysis to scale-up characterization, encompassing computational screening, process optimization, and scale-up evaluation. This structured approach reduces the design-build-test-learn cycle from the conventional 12–24 months to just 8–12 months for moderately complex targets.

The AI-Driven Industrial Biocatalysis module addresses the journey from reaction engineering to full-scale implementation, including substrate concentration optimization, cofactor regeneration, immobilization, and integration of process analytical technology. The objective is a fundamentally improved industrial workflow built around the catalytic process.

The AI-Driven Green Biocatalysis module provides sustainability-focused solutions that align with corporate environmental goals. Enzymatic reactions typically occur in aqueous media at room temperature, minimizing organic solvent use and emissions. AI-guided development amplifies these advantages by identifying inherently more efficient enzymes, reducing the environmental footprint of both development and production.

The platform's capabilities have been demonstrated through a recent case study in transaminase engineering. Researchers developed a 6D protein engineering framework that combines interaction energy, solvent effects, and 1.39 million structural fragments to predict beneficial mutations. Five transaminase variants selected by AI exhibited high solubility and catalytic stability at 7-liter fermentation scale, converting prochiral ketones to sitagliptin with enantiomeric purity exceeding 99% and conversion rates up to 89% during scale-up production.

Pharmaceutical applications are leading the adoption of AI biocatalysis, particularly in asymmetric synthesis of chiral intermediates and replacing hazardous reagents. Agrochemicals and food sectors are also exploring the technology for toxicology profiling and cleaner labels, while fine chemicals and personal care industries are beginning to explore high-value conversions and milder, more sustainable processes.
