The American Heart Association announced that Bradley A. Maron, M.D., FAHA, has been appointed as the new editor-in-chief of Circulation, the Association’s flagship peer-reviewed journal and one of the world’s leading scientific publications in cardiovascular medicine. Effective with today’s issue, Maron will guide the journal’s editorial direction, building on its legacy of publishing rigorous, practice-changing science for clinicians, researchers, and healthcare professionals globally.
Maron, a board-certified clinical cardiologist and distinguished researcher, is recognized globally for his mechanistic and clinical advances in pulmonary hypertension, right heart failure, and cardiomyopathy. His career bridges patient care, translational science, and precision medicine, with a focus on pulmonary vascular disease. He serves as senior associate dean for precision medicine, director of the Pulmonary Hypertension Center at the University of Maryland Medical Center, and the Melvin Sharovsky Professor of Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He also co-executive directs the University of Maryland Institute for Health Computing. Previously, he held faculty appointments at Harvard Medical School and served as a visiting professor at Imperial College London.
“Dr. Maron’s appointment underscores the American Heart Association’s commitment to advancing transformative science,” said Shelley Miyamoto, M.D., FAHA, chair of the Association’s Scientific Publishing Committee. “His vision, scientific breadth, and dedication to robust research and innovation position Circulation for optimal success.” Maron succeeds Joseph A. Hill, M.D., FAHA, who led the journal since 2016, and Joseph Loscalzo, M.D., Ph.D., FAHA, editor-in-chief from 2004-2016.
Maron expressed deep honor at leading Circulation, stating, “Our mission is to reinvigorate the type of cardiovascular science and medicine published in Circulation, and fast track that information to our readers with additional transparency.” New features include a Clinician Lighthouse article for expert-guided interpretation of diagnostic tests, a Clinician’s Corner for real-world practice, and graphic abstracts for all research articles. The journal will also introduce a Patient’s Corner for the public and enhanced eTOC alerts with brief summaries. A streamlined submission process with accelerated review timelines is also planned.
Maron is joined by a new editorial team, including Executive Editor Karen E. Joynt Maddox, M.D., M.P.H., FAHA, and Deputy Executive Editor Sadiya S. Khan, M.D., M.Sc., FAHA. Ten deputy editors oversee specific sections, such as Fundamental Sciences (Joseph C. Wu, M.D., Ph.D., FAHA) and AI for Process and Science (Thomas M. Maddox, M.D., M.Sc., FAHA).
Maron earned his medical degree from Brown University and completed training at Boston Medical Center and Brigham and Women’s Hospital. With over 260 scientific publications, he holds six patents and has led federally funded research for over two decades. His work includes discovering novel molecular mechanisms of vascular fibrosis and using AI to automate clinical diagnosis. He has served in volunteer leadership roles for the American Heart Association and other organizations.
