In a recent Substack post, bestselling author Elizabeth Graham, who spent nearly twenty years in Russia, Central Asia, and Ukraine, issued a stark warning about the state of American democracy under President Donald Trump. Graham, author of the book 'From Democracy To Democrazy: A Warning To All Americans', argues that Trump is a traitor controlled by Russian President Vladimir Putin and is leading the United States toward tyranny and despotism.
Graham draws on historical parallels, citing Roman statesman Cicero's warning about treason from within. 'A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within,' Cicero said. Graham contends that many Americans refuse to acknowledge Trump's alleged treachery, a situation she likens to Mark Twain's proverb: 'It ain't what you don't know that gets you into trouble. It is what you know for sure that just ain't so.'
Graham claims that Trump's actions, including the removal of U.S. troops from Germany, a campaign to negate NATO, and the closure of USAID, weaken the United States and align with Putin's interests. She alleges that Trump was compromised by Russian intelligence during a trip to Moscow in 1987, a claim she says was verified by former KGB operative Oleg Kalugin in an interview with Craig Unger for 'American Kompromat'.
Graham also asserts that Russian organized crime launders money through Trump condos worldwide, citing a Guardian report from December 4, 2024, and that Trump's net worth increased by $2 billion in the last year, according to Forbes on September 9, 2025.
Kirkus Professional Book Reviewers called Graham's book an 'intriguing and informative must read' and praised her as 'probably the best-informed American on the terrifying realities concerning Vladimir Putin's motivations and his control over Trump.'
