Football fans attending Super Bowl LX Experience in San Francisco will have the opportunity to learn Hands-Only CPR, a skill that can double or triple a person's chance of survival from cardiac arrest. The American Heart Association's Nation of Lifesavers Mobile CPR Unit will be stationed at the Moscone Convention Center from Feb. 3 to Feb. 7, offering walk-up instruction to attendees. According to the American Heart Association, compression-only CPR is equally effective as traditional CPR in the first few minutes of an emergency and is simple to perform: call 911 and push hard and fast in the center of the chest.
This collaboration between the American Heart Association and the NFL underscores the importance of public health initiatives at major sporting events. 'When more people know CPR, more lives can be saved,' said Nancy Brown, CEO of the American Heart Association, in a news release. The goal is to build a Nation of Lifesavers, aiming to double cardiac arrest survival rates by 2030. Currently, 9 out of 10 people who experience cardiac arrest outside a hospital die, often because they do not receive immediate CPR.
The NFL also supports the Heart's in-school programs, Kids Heart Challenge and American Heart Challenge, which have taught Hands-Only CPR to students for nearly 50 years. Five students who learned CPR through these programs won tickets to Super Bowl LX, and their schools are eligible for a $10,000 physical education makeover. Schools and students can enter now to win tickets to Super Bowl LXI in Los Angeles in 2027.
The American Heart Association is the worldwide leader in resuscitation science and publishes the official CPR guidelines. With nearly 3 out of 4 cardiac arrests occurring at home, knowing CPR is essential. The Association's Nation of Lifesavers Player Ambassadors, a 2025 class of 32 NFL players including Damar Hamlin of the Buffalo Bills and Kenny Pickett of the Las Vegas Raiders, are urging fans to learn the lifesaving skill.
Since January 2023, the American Heart Association has worked with more than half of NFL teams to educate players, staff, and community members on Hands-Only CPR and Heartsaver CPR AED. Teams such as the Atlanta Falcons, Chicago Bears, and Kansas City Chiefs have hosted training sessions. This marks the sixth appearance of the Mobile CPR Unit at a major NFL event, having previously trained fans at Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans, LVIII in Las Vegas, and the 2025 NFL Draft in Green Bay. The unit will also be at the 2026 NFL Draft in Pittsburgh.
