AI Search Leaves Local Businesses Out of 46% of Answers, Study Finds

Local businesses were absent from nearly half of all AI-generated answers to everyday Australian consumer questions, according to a study published by Snowball Productions. The research, titled The Australian AI Answer Gap, tested 50 questions across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Mode. In 23 of those queries, no Australian business was named, revealing a structural gap between where consumers seek information and where local firms have a presence.

One striking finding is that Reddit outperformed local business websites as a cited source. The study attributes this to an authority gap: local businesses that did appear held roughly a quarter of the authority of higher-ranked sources. This gap in perceived credibility, measured through signals AI systems use to judge source quality, explains why aggregator content, forums and international publishers are favored over local firms.

The implications are significant. As consumers turn to AI tools for local services and product recommendations, a business missing from AI answers is functionally equivalent to not appearing on the first page of search results. The study frames this as a need for generative engine optimisation (GEO), which focuses on how AI systems evaluate source authority, content structure and topical relevance when constructing natural-language answers.

For Australian businesses, existing digital marketing strategies may not translate into visibility on AI platforms. A business can hold strong local search rankings yet be absent from AI answers if its content does not meet generative platform signals. The study suggests that investing in authority-building—through structured content, credible backlinks and clear topical expertise—improves the likelihood of appearing in AI responses.

The audit covered ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Mode, selected for their growing share of consumer-facing AI search in Australia. The findings contribute to evidence that the rules for being named in an AI answer differ from traditional organic search rankings.
